Jonathan Highfield gave a guest lecture entitled “A Foodie’s View of History: South Africa, Incarceration, Bunny Chow, and Smileys” at the Dwight-Englewood School in Englewood, NJ on December 4, 2015.

Apartheid shaped food and foodways in South Africa, and those effects can still be read in the archive of South African food. From smileys, the grilled sheep heads ubiquitous in African townships, to bunny chow, a curry sandwich developed in Durban takeaways, food in South Africa reveals the history of inequality and the resistance of inventiveness.
